What is 'profoundly gifted' and 'exceptionally gifted'?
Under construction - to be continued 'Exceptionally gifted' should not be confused with the term 'exceptionally able' which is used in UK government and education circles to mean the top 5%, or sometimes 10%, of children by ability. Internationally, the exceptionally gifted are defined as those who lie in the top 0.01% of intelligence. In other words, the exceptionally gifted occur at a rate of about 1 in 10,000 children. (In terms of IQ they have an IQ of 160 or more as measured by a test where the average score is 100 and about 95% of children score between IQ70 and IQ130.They are four standard deviations away from the average IQ of the population.) The profoundly gifted occur at a rate of one in a million, are in the top 0.0001%, are five standard deviations away from the mean IQ of the population, and have an IQ of 175 or above. |
